What I Wish Every Dance Parent Knew Going into 2025
As we head into a new year, I’ve been thinking about what I’d love every dance parent to know to make this journey fun and stress-free. So here are my top three tips to keep in mind for 2025.
1. Comparison Steals the Joy
Let’s talk about something we all do: comparing. It’s tempting to look around and wonder why someone else’s kid is nailing their turns while yours is taking a break on the floor. But here’s the thing—every kid is different, and their journey in dance (and life!) is unique.
Here’s a little story: when I was three, I laid down in the middle of dance class and… sucked my thumb. Yep, you read that right! My mom probably thought, “What are we even doing here?” But guess what? That thumb-sucking toddler grew up to absolutely love dance.
So if your kid’s not following along perfectly, don’t sweat it. They’re likely right on track. Let’s celebrate their individuality and trust that they’ll get there in their own time.
2. Stick With It
One of the best things you can do for your dancer is just keep showing up. Experts say habits are built through consistency, and that’s true for dance, too. Even on those busy or low-energy days, making it to class can work wonders over time.
You’ll be amazed at their growth after a year—and even more so from year to year. That said, if you’re finding it hard to come regularly, it might be time to reassess. It’s okay to say “no” to dance for a season if it helps your family’s rhythm. Of course, we’d love for dance to be a priority, but what matters most is that your family feels balanced and happy.
