DRESS REHEARSAL
Tuesday, May 28, 5-8 pm (only 10am Performers)
Thursday, May 30, 5-9 pm (only 2pm/5pm Performers)
Dress Rehearsal will begin at 5pm inside the auditorium at Hagee Communication Center on your designated day. (See heading above for the day your performer will rehearse.)
Please arrive 5-10 min. early if you will be putting your dancer’s costume on at the venue. We will begin promptly at 5pm, and you will miss important information if you are in the restroom dressing your dancer.
Students will NOT have a backstage helper for dress rehearsal, so please make sure you or someone else stays to help them change. Please arrive with hair and makeup done and all costumes/costume pieces ready to wear.
There are spacious restrooms in the lobby and on either side of the auditorium that may be used for changing.
No food or drinks are permitted inside the auditorium, but dancers may bring and eat quick snacks in the lobby between dances if necessary.
Dancers may leave after they rehearse their final dance.
Please Note: It is required for all dancers to wear a tan, thin strap leotard under all costumes. You can order one on Nimbly by clicking here or purchase a similar one at another retailer.
RECITAL DAY-OF PROCEDURE
Backstage & What to Bring
We will have backstage helpers for your child so you can sit back and enjoy the show. Please bring your dancer dressed in their first costume with hair and makeup done. Refer to the Order of Show to find your dancer’s first number and the Costume Details handout or your Parent Portal to see all costume details.
All other costumes, dance shoes, and proper colored tights should be on hangers or in a bag or small suitcase. Please make sure to label EVERYTHING, including the bag, tights, shoes, accessories, and any personal items, such as water bottles, with your dancer’s name. Do NOT bring any valuable or special personal items from home, as these things tend to get lost in the backstage shuffle.
Check-In/Out
At call time (see below), you will check your dancer in at the designated Check-In table in the long hallway next to the auditorium. Only ONE caregiver should be in the Check-In/Out area to maintain a quick and safe process.
Call Times
10 am Recital: Call time will be 9:15 am for students.
2 pm/5 pm Recital: Call time will be 1:15 pm for students.
Continue reading for specific instructions for each level.
Creative Movement and Combo Classes: Parents/Caregivers will be given a matching nametag, which will be required at Check-Out. Dancers will be assigned to a helper and taken to their dressing room. No adults outside of authorized Danceworks Event Staff will be allowed to accompany dancers to the dressing room area.
After the recital, one parent or caregiver will check your dancer out at the same table. Parents or caregivers will be required to present the nametag given at check-in to claim their dancer.
Levels A, B, & C: Parents/Caregivers will be given a matching nametag, which will be required at Check-Out. Dancers will be assigned to a helper and taken to their dressing room. No adults outside of authorized Danceworks Event Staff will be allowed to accompany dancers to the dressing room area.
After the 2 pm show, ONE parent/caregiver may claim their dancer from the stage to take pictures in exchange for their nametag. After taking pictures, please return your dancer to the stage, where your nametag will be returned to you again to be used for check-out. (If a caregiver is not present at the 2 pm show, your dancer will remain with their helper.)
After the 5 p.m. show, parents/caregivers will check their dancers out at the same Check-In/out table in the long hallway beside the auditorium. To claim their dancer, parents/Caregivers will be required to present the nametag given at check-in.
Levels 1-4: ALL dancers are required to sign in at call time and sign out following the 5 pm show at the Check-In/Out table in the long hallway next to the auditorium. It is the parent’s/caregiver’s choice to accompany their dancer to check in and meet them there to check out.
Company Members: ALL company members are required to sign in at call time and sign out following the 5 pm show at the Check-In/Out table in the long hallway next to the auditorium. It is the parent’s/caregiver’s choice to accompany their dancer to check in and meet them there to check out.
Important Notes
Dancers in the 2 pm/5 pm Recitals are required to remain at the venue between shows. Please send them with a snack and water bottle. Try to avoid messy food that could stain their costumes. Dancers will be allowed to visit and take pictures in the auditorium between shows, but they are not allowed to leave the venue.
All students are required to stay for the entire length of their show(s) unless Danceworks staff has been previously notified. If a circumstance requires your dancer to leave before the end of their show, please notify us IN WRITING before dress rehearsal.
COSTUMES
It is required for all dancers to wear a tan, thin strap leotard under all costumes. Please wear tights on the outside of this leotard. In other words, the tan leotard is the first layer. You can order one on Nimbly by clicking the button below or purchase a similar one at another retailer.
Please label EVERYTHING with your dancer’s name, including tights, accessories, and shoes! See your Costume Details handout or the Parent Portal (Info > Costumes) for more details on shoes, tights, accessories, etc. for your dancer’s specific classes. Shoes and tights may be ordered through our online store Nimbly. Alternatively, you may purchase from a retailer of your choice. Suggestions include Amazon (Capezio Tights: Colors-Ballet Pink & Suntan), or going to local dance stores such as Dancewear Etc. in Cedar Hill.
Note: To view costume details in the Parent Portal, go to Info > Costumes.
Please ensure your costumes are wrinkle-free by recital time. We know it is tempting for your dancers, especially younger ones, to play in their costumes. We highly recommend having one "fashion show" for your family and then placing the costume on a hanger in a closet until dress rehearsal.
If you have pets, take special care to protect your costumes (shiny sequins and fluffy tutus can look quite tempting to furry friends!). Some costumes come in a hanging bag from the manufacturer and may be kept hanging in that bag.
HAIR & MAKEUP
It is important that dancers have the correct hair and make up for recital. Please make sure that hair and makeup are done BEFORE coming to the venue as dressing room space is limited.
Makeup
Makeup is a must for all dancers in all dance performances. Stage lights tend to wash out facial features, but makeup helps to mitigate that effect. Basic makeup requirements are:
neutral color eye shadow (shades of brown)
cheek color
lip color (shades of pink or red)
black mascara (optional for younger students)
black eyeliner (optional for younger students)
Hair
Refer to the Costume Details handout or the Parent Portal (Info > Costumes) for the specific hairstyle your dancer should have for each dance.
For ballet buns, the bun should be placed on the middle or low part of the back of the head. Click the button below to see a tutorial video for making a perfect ballet bun! Hint: Your bun should resemble a cinnamon roll; it should not look like a doorknob or a donut.
PRACTICE VIDEOS
Instructors will be submitting class videos so that students may practice their dances at home. Click the button below to access the videos folder. Check back often as instructors will be adding videos on an ongoing basis.
Dancers in Levels A-4 who are absent from class are expected to watch the video and learn the choreography they miss. It is vital that your dancer(s) attend class regularly in preparation for the recital. Thank you for helping us to ensure your dancer is confident onstage!
