 RECITAL DAY-OF PROCEDURE

Backstage & What to Bring

  • We will have backstage helpers for your child so you can sit back and enjoy the show. Please bring your dancer dressed in their first costume with hair and makeup done. Refer to the Order of Show to find your dancer’s first number and the Costume Details handout to see all costume details.

  • All other costumes, dance shoes, and properly colored tights should be on hangers or in a bag or small suitcase. Please make sure to label EVERYTHING, including the bag, tights, shoes, accessories, and any personal items, such as water bottles, with your dancer’s name. Do NOT bring any valuable or special personal items from home, as these things tend to get lost in the backstage shuffle.

Check-In/Out

At call time (see below), you will check your dancer in at the designated Check-In table in the long hallway on the north side of the auditorium. Only ONE caregiver should be in the Check-In area to ensure a quick and safe process.

Call Times
9:30 am Recital:
Call time will be 9:00 am for students.
11 am Recital: Call time will be 10:30 am for students.
2 pm/5 pm Recital: Call time will be 1:15 pm for students.

Continue reading for specific instructions for each level.

PreK Creative Movement, Combo Class, and Level A Dancers:

  • Upon check-in, parents/caregivers will be given a matching nametag, which will be required at check-out.

  • Dancers will be assigned to a helper and taken to their dressing room. For the safety of your dancer(s), no adults outside of authorized Danceworks Event Staff will be allowed to accompany dancers to the dressing room area.

  • After the recital, one parent or caregiver will check your dancer out at the designated check-out area in the long hallway on the south side of the auditorium (near Einstein’s Bagel store). Parents or caregivers must present the nametag given at check-in to claim their dancer.

  • After checking out your dancer, you can return to the lobby to take photos and enjoy time with family and friends who are in attendance.

Level B & C Dancers (*See below if you are in Company):

  • Upon check-in, parents/caregivers will be given a matching nametag, which will be required at check-out.

  • Dancers will be assigned to a helper and taken to their dressing room. For the safety of your dancer(s), no adults outside of authorized Danceworks Event Staff will be allowed to accompany dancers to the dressing room area.

  • After the 2 pm show, ONE parent/caregiver may claim their dancer from the front of the stage to take pictures. A nametag must be presented to claim a dancer from the stage. No exceptions. After taking pictures, dancers should be returned to the front of the stage, where their nametag will be returned to you to be used for check-out. (If a caregiver is not present at the 2 pm show, your dancer will remain safely backstage with their helper.)

  • Dancers may not leave the venue between shows. See Important Notes below.

  • After the 5 p.m. show, one parent or caregiver will check your dancer out at the designated check-out area in the long hallway on the south side of the auditorium (near the Einstein Bros Bagel store). Parents or caregivers must present the nametag given at check-in to claim their dancer.

  • After checking out your dancer, you can return to the lobby to take photos and enjoy time with family and friends who are in attendance.

Levels 1-4 (*See below if you are in Company):

  • ALL dancers are required to sign in at call time and sign out following the 5 p.m. show at the designated Check-In table in the long hallway on the north side of the auditorium. Parents or caregivers may accompany their dancer to check in and meet them there to check out. Please coordinate these arrangements with your dancer.

  • Dancers are required to remain at the venue between the 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. shows. See the Important Notes below.

*Movers & Shakers Dance Company Members:

  • ALL company members are required to sign in and sign out at the Check-In/check-out table at the entrance to the backstage hallway when arriving and leaving the venue. Parents or caregivers can choose to accompany their dancer to check in and meet them there to check out. Please coordinate these arrangements with your dancer.

  • MSDC members may leave the venue after the 11:00 show for a short lunch break, but they must return to check in for the next show by 1:15.

  • Company members cannot leave the venue between the 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. shows. See the Important Notes below.

  • Please sign in and out each time you arrive or leave the venue.

Important Notes

  • Dancers in the 2 p.m./5 p.m. Recitals are required to remain at the venue between shows. Please send them with a snack and water bottle. Try to avoid messy food that could stain their costumes. Between shows, dancers will be allowed to visit and take pictures in the auditorium, but they are not allowed to leave the venue.

  • All students must stay for the entire length of their show(s) unless Danceworks staff has been previously notified. If a circumstance requires your dancer to leave before the end of their show, please notify us IN WRITING before dress rehearsal.

 COSTUMES

It is required for all dancers to wear a tan, thin strap leotard under all costumes. Please wear tights on the outside of this leotard. In other words, the tan leotard is the first layer. You can order one on Nimbly by clicking the button below or purchase a similar one at another retailer.

Please label EVERYTHING with your dancer’s name, including tights, accessories, and shoes! See your Costume Details handout for more details on shoes, tights, accessories, etc. for your dancer’s specific classes. Shoes and tights may be ordered through our online store Nimbly. Alternatively, you may purchase from a retailer of your choice. Suggestions include Amazon (Capezio Tights: Colors-Ballet Pink & Suntan), or going to local dance stores such as Dancewear Etc. in Cedar Hill.

Please ensure your costumes are wrinkle-free by recital time. We know it is tempting for your dancers, especially younger ones, to play in their costumes. We highly recommend having one "fashion show" for your family and then placing the costume on a hanger in a closet until dress rehearsal.

If you have pets, take special care to protect your costumes (shiny sequins and fluffy tutus can look quite tempting to furry friends!). Some costumes come in a hanging bag from the manufacturer and may be kept hanging in that bag.

 HAIR & MAKEUP

It is important that dancers have the correct hair and make up for recital. Please make sure that hair and makeup are done BEFORE coming to the venue as dressing room space is limited.

Makeup

Makeup is a must for all dancers in all dance performances. Stage lights tend to wash out facial features, but makeup helps to mitigate that effect. Basic makeup requirements are:

neutral color eye shadow (shades of brown)
cheek color
lip color (shades of pink or red)
black mascara (optional for younger students)
black eyeliner (optional for younger students)

Hair

All dancers will be required to wear their hair in a ballet bun for all dances. Refer to the Costume Details handout for any hair accessories your dancer should have for each dance.

We are selling bun kits for $10 each at the front desk. Each kit includes a brush, hair elastics, hairpins, a hairnet, and hairspray.

For ballet buns, the bun should be placed on the middle or low part of the back of the head. Click the button below to see a tutorial video for making a perfect ballet bun! Hint: Your bun should resemble a cinnamon roll; it should not look like a doorknob or a donut.

 PRACTICE VIDEOS

Practice Anytime, Anywhere!

Our instructors are uploading videos of each class dance so your dancer can practice at home. Just click the button below to access the video folder—and keep checking back! We’ll be adding new videos regularly.

If your dancer is in Levels A-4 and has to miss a class, it’s super important they watch the video and catch up on any choreography they missed. Regular attendance makes a big difference, especially as we get closer to recital time. Thanks for helping us make sure your dancer feels confident and ready to shine on stage!
